Fall Idea House 2016 Part 2

This is the second in a series of peeks into an Idea House full of beautiful decor and vintage finds for the fall season. In Part 1 of Fall Idea House 2016, I mentioned all the layering that I saw. That trend continues in Part 2 as well. Notice, also, the cool blues and mixed metals.

Fall Idea House 2016 Part 2

Remember, it’s a group of decorators that transform this house three times a year with “what’s new” and repurposed items. I’m taking you on this visual tour of ideas and sharing what I’ve found. Everything is beautifully done. Let’s go…..

First, as you enter this house, the dining room is the room that you notice. The centerpiece on the table is elegant and has lots of texture and cool blue color. The tall birch-like vases are filled with any filler (beans, rice, etc.) and then a votive glass sits on top!

Fall Idea House 2016 Part 2

Here’s a close up of the layering on the table and place-setting. Wallpaper or even wrapping paper would work, too!

Look closely at the centerpiece….. bring out those tiny LED lights and use them anytime to make a centerpiece sparkle!

Fall Idea House 2016 Part 2

In this picture, you can see the wood plank that the centerpiece sits on. It adds another layer to the center of the table.

Fall Idea House 2016 Part 2

Above the buffet, the two pictures alone on the wall wouldn’t look balanced, but by layering with two wood pieces, it looks just right in proportion to the space. (another layering idea)

Fall Idea House 2016 Part 2

Next, we walk into the cute vintage kitchen. In the center is a small vintage looking chopping block. Looks like breakfast is being served to guests!

Fall Idea House 2016 Part 2

Salvaged wooden planks line the open shelving. A large copper plate with a wooden squirrel serves as wall art.

Fall Idea House 2016 Part 2

A deep copper mirror provides a wall shelf above the range. On each side, decorative copper lines the candle holders, too.

Fall Idea House 2016 Part 2

One the side of the stove, a vintage shelving unit serves as an organizer for kitchen supplies.

Fall Idea House 2016 Part 2

Here’s another example of layering….   The wall clock is attached to a salvaged metal grid and under it all is a piece of copper.

Fall Idea House 2016 Part 2

This copper wall planter filled with herbs is another metallic accent.

Fall Idea House 2016 Part 2

This is not the best picture, (I apologize) but I wanted to show this easy idea for a curtain. They used a dish towel and attached it to a piece of salvage wood with upholstery tacks. EASY!

Fall Idea House 2016 Part 2

In the small vintage bathroom, there are two mirrors side by side. Above the stool, three small repurposed drawers are topped with a salvaged board for a shelf.

Fall Idea House 2016 Part 2

The old vintage sink is skirted with a copper metallic fabric to hide the plumbing in keeping with the metal theme.

Fall Idea House 2016 Part 2

In the hallway to the upstairs bedrooms, there are large rectangles painted with copper paint. Then, it is layered with an old fence section and topped with a mirror.

Fall Idea House 2016 Part 2

The last idea for this post is at the top of the stairs. The same theme continues by using a large copper painted rectangle, two fence sections, three metal flowers and a coordinating print. The end product looks beautiful!

Fall Idea House 2016 Part 2

Remember, when you don’t have the right size piece for a large wall space, think of how you can layer and make it work!

Happy Decorating!

Fall Decor Idea House Part 4

Fall Decor Idea House Part 4

We’ve covered a lot of ideas in the three posts prior to this last one. The Fall Decor Idea House Part 4 probably has the most unusual re-purposed ideas I’ve seen in a long time. While interior designers have totally decorated for fall, many of these ideas work for any season. The two rooms left are the master bedroom and living room. Just wait…..as I’m saving the most unusual until last! Stick with me.

Fall Decor Idea House part 4 grandparentsplus.com

First a look at the master bedroom…..

They used a spring from a crib for the headboard, but they dressed it up with a decorative runner and colorful rugs. (closer look below) You’ll find those same colors picked up in the pillows on the bed. Notice more of the same color accents throughout the room.

Along side the bed, stacked crates create the bedside tables.

With a closer view, you can see how they secured the rugs and runner. Regular office clips hold everything in place.

Fall Decor Idea House Part 4 grandparentsplus.com

Opposite the bed, a vintage Scandinavian buffet serves as the dresser.

In the corner of the master bedroom, a suitcase outfitted with legs and glass top, serves as a side table. A metal basket, turned upside down, becomes a pendant light while decorative key rings, hanging around it, give it sparkle!

On the way down to the living room, there’s one unique item I forgot to include. Don’t ever toss a stool with a leg missing or a part destroyed. Instead, turn it into a wall shelf using the good parts that are left. Above the shelf, is a salvaged wood piece with “thankful” stenciled on it.

Walking into the living room, you quickly focus on the fireplace. An ornamental elk horn decorates the mantel with pumpkins displayed around it. The top part of the fireplace looks like stacked stone, but it really is wallpaper!

In a sitting area of the living room, there’s a wicker chest, draped in two runners, that serves as a coffee table. Beside the loveseat, is a floor lamp made from a vintage stair newel and a large candleholder.

Hanging from the medallion in the center of the living room are wire cages filled with artificial stems and pumpkins. The table underneath is a re-purposed, circular greenhouse heater. A glass top turns it into a “one of a kind” table.

In the sun-room extension of the living room, an old school desk becomes a plant stand. Also, on a narrow wall, a lamp is mounted on a long vintage shutter.

Back into the living room, look closely to find the most unusual item that is re-purposed. If you were raised in the city, you may not know about these items.

Fall Decor Idea House part 4 grandparentsplus.com

Did you find the unusual items? On either side of the buffet, there are vintage, wooden cow stanchions. A stanchion is used to lock cows in place while being milked. Who would ever think to use them as decor in a beautiful living room? They certainly are a conversation piece! Do you agree?

Within the stanchion, a re-purposed wooden shoe form braces the added shelf.

Fall Decor Idea House Part 4 grandparentsplus.com

Have you ever seen a stanchion used in this way? Being a city girl, I had to be told what they were and certainly could not have imagined them used in a formal living room arrangement! How fun! Seeing the entire area tied together with the colors of taupe, white, and silver used in the art work, frames, arrangements, and lamps, makes everything work. It’s a great look!

This is the last look at the Fall Decor Idea House! I hope you have found some fun, new ways to decorate. This house certainly has an abundance of ideas for both fall decor along with vintage re-purposed items. Now, be on the look-out for those stanchions and let me know how you use them!

Fall Decor Idea House Part 3

Do you remember from Part 1 that this Fall Decor Idea House featured a lot of salvaged wood? Well, in this part 3 of the series, you’ll see more uses for it. Perhaps one will inspire you to do something similar in your own home. Part 3 takes you into the stairway, wine room, photo gallery room, guest room, and bathroom. Wow, that’s a lot of territory and ideas so let’s get started!

Fall Decor Idea House Part 3 a

In the photo above you see some ways they used salvaged wood.  In the stairway, they used salvaged wood planks that set off the art work . The stairway is very narrow and tall and this arrangement looked awesome.

Along with the artwork in the stairway,  they used salvaged wood for the window valance there, too!

Fall Decor Idea House Part 3 grandparentsplus.com

Salvaged wood makes an interesting display as wall art in the wine room. Look how they used pallets! There’s a large piece of salvaged wood on the top for the table with the wine storage between the pallets. Fall Decor Idea House Part 3 grandparentsplus.com

Look what they have done with wine corks! Bet you won’t throw any away again!

Fall Decor Idea House Part 3 grandparentsplus.com

There are wine corks glued around a styrofoam ball, displayed in a bowl and shadow box. They’re in a hanging cage with a lit wine bottle, too. Oh, don’t forget the salvaged wood with wine corks as hooks along with the interesting wine bottle and wood display. Enough wine cork ideas for you? Start saving the wine corks! Actually, I think you can buy them in bulk, too.

Next up is the photo gallery room!

Fall Decor Idea House Part 3 grandparentsplus.com

In this area of the room, there are various mixed wood frames. The shelves, of course, are made from salvaged wood and the table is an old vintage barrel with a glass top. Artwork is incorporated in and among the family pictures. On one picture that has a background of wallpaper, they used glass markers to write phrases. Notice on the upper left corner how an old insulator serves as a wall hook.

Two other areas of the photo gallery room look very different. One area uses all black frames.

Fall Decor Idea House Part 3 grandparentsplus.com

The frames are tightly grouped together to look like one big wall collage. Notice how some frames pictures are scrapbook paper; others are wallpaper. Stickers, also, create framed word art. Two frames are wheat pictures. Go to grandparentsplus.com/wheat-pictures  to see directions on how to make these. (They make a wonderful gift.)

The black metal lights tie in so well with the black frames.

The next wall is all mixed metal frames.

Now to the guest room….

Fall Decor Idea House Part 3 grandparentsplus.com

In the guest room, the bookshelf takes the place of a headboard. Alongside of the blue chair is a side table which is a vintage metal workbench. Vintage shutters become interesting wall decor and the artwork is layered over salvaged metal expandable mesh. Fun to see unusual things reused in such interesting ways!

Finally, we go to the small upstairs bathroom…  Remember, these old homes have very small bathrooms, but it is big on ideas!

Fall Decor Idea House Part 3 grandparentsplus.com

The upper left picture shows vintage library card drawers turned into wall shelving! (Oh dear, I think I remember these in school!) To hold the toilet paper, a metal basket is hung on the wall with a piece of rebar to keep the roll of paper in place.

The salvaged wood piece, with three metal owl hooks, acts as a towel hook above the sink.

On the last picture, this metal shelving unit serves as bathroom storage over the stool.

Which idea did you like the best? Hard to choose, isn’t it! After seeing all the re-purposed items, you start to look at every vintage piece you see in a different way.

I hope you enjoyed seeing these rooms with all the salvaged wood ideas along with many unique vintage re-purposed pieces. Remember, this is not the end. I have one more post with the living room and master bedroom. Some of the items you will see in Part 4 will amaze you, I promise!

Fall Decor Idea House Part 2

Welcome to Part 2 of the Fall Decor Idea House! This time we are touring the dining room, kitchen, and small vintage bathroom off the kitchen. You’ll be surprised at some of the re-purposed items. Throughout this home, done by several decorators, you’ll see how they used old wood planks in so many different ways. You will even see how they used them in the dining room. You’d think that with such a formal setting, they wouldn’t work, but they do!

Fall Decor Idea House Part 2 grandparentsplus.com

Here’s a view of the dining room both to the right and then to the left. Do you see any re-purposed items?

Fall Decor Idea House part 2 grandparentsplus.com

The buffet to the left is actually an old dresser. A door was removed (or perhaps missing) and they added baskets to the shelving. Also, the table has old posts for legs.

On the table they have used multi-layered fabrics along with placemats and large flat gold plastic leaves. It truly is a mixture of gold, silver, salvaged wood and glass. As an extra touch of gold, they wrapped the stems of the wine glasses with gold wire.

Fall Decor Idea House Part 2 grandparentsplus.com

There’s so much detail to this table that it’s hard to take it all in! Notice the candles that are embellished with upholstery tacks. Now, that’s quick and easy to do!

Fall Decor Idea House Part 2

#1  Use a recycled sheet of paper and folded it for the placement of the tacks. This way it will be even all the way around. Mark off where you want your tacks to go. I used 6 tacks for this candle. (8 works, too)

#2  Push the tacks through at the edge of the paper.

#3 Remove the paper and you’re done! Everything is even all the way around.

Upholstery tacks come in silver, bronze, and gold, along with other variations. I used the plain bronze ones. They used shiny gold tacks. Pretty easy, right?

Look at the old wood planks down the middle of the table. At first thought, you’d think it wouldn’t work, but with the pair of wooden finials, and other wood items, it all works together.

Fall Decor Idea House Part 2 grandparentsplus.com

A close look at the place-setting shows the large, flat gold plastic leaves (top left in picture below) that add extra glitz and texture to the table setting. Gold metal leaves adorn the napkin.

Fall Decor Idea House Part 2 grandparentsplus.com

Next, we travel to the kitchen. Would you think to re-purpose old wooden car ramps? They used them on each side of the stove and tied them together above with salvaged metal for extra kitchen storage. The spice rack is re-purposed hardware drawers. Now that’s total reuse and re-purpose to the max, I think!

Fall Decor Idea House Part 2 grandparentsplus.com

The vintage wooden ironing board fits into the inset. The added hook gives a place to hang an apron.

More salvaged wood!  Yes, in the kitchen you find it used as window valances!

The cute red-topped kitchen island is a re-purposed workbench. It sits on a wheeled car so it’s easily moved.

Fall Decor Idea House Part 2 grandparentsplus.com

The last room for this post is the small bathroom next to the kitchen. Both the ledge and what is behind the metal wall decor is salvaged wood. This bathroom has an old-fashion corner sink with the plumbing that shows. To hide the plumbing, they used corrugated metal for a skirt.

Fall Decor Idea House Part 2 grandparentsplus.com

Don’t think this is the end of ideas. We still have several rooms to explore with more vintage re-purposed items, fall decor, and salvaged wood. I  hope you got some new ideas from this tour. Don’t forget to come back for Part 3. Be sure to check Fall Decor Idea House Part 1 if you missed it!
