Fall Decor Idea House Part 3

Do you remember from Part 1 that this Fall Decor Idea House featured a lot of salvaged wood? Well, in this part 3 of the series, you’ll see more uses for it. Perhaps one will inspire you to do something similar in your own home. Part 3 takes you into the stairway, wine room, photo gallery room, guest room, and bathroom. Wow, that’s a lot of territory and ideas so let’s get started!

Fall Decor Idea House Part 3 a

In the photo above you see some ways they used salvaged wood.  In the stairway, they used salvaged wood planks that set off the art work . The stairway is very narrow and tall and this arrangement looked awesome.

Along with the artwork in the stairway,  they used salvaged wood for the window valance there, too!

Fall Decor Idea House Part 3 grandparentsplus.com

Salvaged wood makes an interesting display as wall art in the wine room. Look how they used pallets! There’s a large piece of salvaged wood on the top for the table with the wine storage between the pallets. Fall Decor Idea House Part 3 grandparentsplus.com

Look what they have done with wine corks! Bet you won’t throw any away again!

Fall Decor Idea House Part 3 grandparentsplus.com

There are wine corks glued around a styrofoam ball, displayed in a bowl and shadow box. They’re in a hanging cage with a lit wine bottle, too. Oh, don’t forget the salvaged wood with wine corks as hooks along with the interesting wine bottle and wood display. Enough wine cork ideas for you? Start saving the wine corks! Actually, I think you can buy them in bulk, too.

Next up is the photo gallery room!

Fall Decor Idea House Part 3 grandparentsplus.com

In this area of the room, there are various mixed wood frames. The shelves, of course, are made from salvaged wood and the table is an old vintage barrel with a glass top. Artwork is incorporated in and among the family pictures. On one picture that has a background of wallpaper, they used glass markers to write phrases. Notice on the upper left corner how an old insulator serves as a wall hook.

Two other areas of the photo gallery room look very different. One area uses all black frames.

Fall Decor Idea House Part 3 grandparentsplus.com

The frames are tightly grouped together to look like one big wall collage. Notice how some frames pictures are scrapbook paper; others are wallpaper. Stickers, also, create framed word art. Two frames are wheat pictures. Go to grandparentsplus.com/wheat-pictures  to see directions on how to make these. (They make a wonderful gift.)

The black metal lights tie in so well with the black frames.

The next wall is all mixed metal frames.

Fall Decor Idea House part 3 grandparentsplus.com

Now to the guest room….

Fall Decor Idea House Part 3 grandparentsplus.com

In the guest room, the bookshelf takes the place of a headboard. Alongside of the blue chair is a side table which is a vintage metal workbench. Vintage shutters become interesting wall decor and the artwork is layered over salvaged metal expandable mesh. Fun to see unusual things reused in such interesting ways!

Finally, we go to the small upstairs bathroom…  Remember, these old homes have very small bathrooms, but it is big on ideas!

Fall Decor Idea House Part 3 grandparentsplus.com

The upper left picture shows vintage library card drawers turned into wall shelving! (Oh dear, I think I remember these in school!) To hold the toilet paper, a metal basket is hung on the wall with a piece of rebar to keep the roll of paper in place.

The salvaged wood piece, with three metal owl hooks, acts as a towel hook above the sink.

On the last picture, this metal shelving unit serves as bathroom storage over the stool.

Which idea did you like the best? Hard to choose, isn’t it! After seeing all the re-purposed items, you start to look at every vintage piece you see in a different way.

I hope you enjoyed seeing these rooms with all the salvaged wood ideas along with many unique vintage re-purposed pieces. Remember, this is not the end. I have one more post with the living room and master bedroom. Some of the items you will see in Part 4 will amaze you, I promise!

Fall Decor Idea House Part 2

Welcome to Part 2 of the Fall Decor Idea House! This time we are touring the dining room, kitchen, and small vintage bathroom off the kitchen. You’ll be surprised at some of the re-purposed items. Throughout this home, done by several decorators, you’ll see how they used old wood planks in so many different ways. You will even see how they used them in the dining room. You’d think that with such a formal setting, they wouldn’t work, but they do!

Fall Decor Idea House Part 2 grandparentsplus.com

Here’s a view of the dining room both to the right and then to the left. Do you see any re-purposed items?

Fall Decor Idea House part 2 grandparentsplus.com

The buffet to the left is actually an old dresser. A door was removed (or perhaps missing) and they added baskets to the shelving. Also, the table has old posts for legs.

On the table they have used multi-layered fabrics along with placemats and large flat gold plastic leaves. It truly is a mixture of gold, silver, salvaged wood and glass. As an extra touch of gold, they wrapped the stems of the wine glasses with gold wire.

Fall Decor Idea House Part 2 grandparentsplus.com

There’s so much detail to this table that it’s hard to take it all in! Notice the candles that are embellished with upholstery tacks. Now, that’s quick and easy to do!

Fall Decor Idea House Part 2

#1  Use a recycled sheet of paper and folded it for the placement of the tacks. This way it will be even all the way around. Mark off where you want your tacks to go. I used 6 tacks for this candle. (8 works, too)

#2  Push the tacks through at the edge of the paper.

#3 Remove the paper and you’re done! Everything is even all the way around.

Upholstery tacks come in silver, bronze, and gold, along with other variations. I used the plain bronze ones. They used shiny gold tacks. Pretty easy, right?

Look at the old wood planks down the middle of the table. At first thought, you’d think it wouldn’t work, but with the pair of wooden finials, and other wood items, it all works together.

Fall Decor Idea House Part 2 grandparentsplus.com

A close look at the place-setting shows the large, flat gold plastic leaves (top left in picture below) that add extra glitz and texture to the table setting. Gold metal leaves adorn the napkin.

Fall Decor Idea House Part 2 grandparentsplus.com

Next, we travel to the kitchen. Would you think to re-purpose old wooden car ramps? They used them on each side of the stove and tied them together above with salvaged metal for extra kitchen storage. The spice rack is re-purposed hardware drawers. Now that’s total reuse and re-purpose to the max, I think!

Fall Decor Idea House Part 2 grandparentsplus.com

The vintage wooden ironing board fits into the inset. The added hook gives a place to hang an apron.

More salvaged wood!  Yes, in the kitchen you find it used as window valances!

The cute red-topped kitchen island is a re-purposed workbench. It sits on a wheeled car so it’s easily moved.

Fall Decor Idea House Part 2 grandparentsplus.com

The last room for this post is the small bathroom next to the kitchen. Both the ledge and what is behind the metal wall decor is salvaged wood. This bathroom has an old-fashion corner sink with the plumbing that shows. To hide the plumbing, they used corrugated metal for a skirt.

Fall Decor Idea House Part 2 grandparentsplus.com

Don’t think this is the end of ideas. We still have several rooms to explore with more vintage re-purposed items, fall decor, and salvaged wood. I  hope you got some new ideas from this tour. Don’t forget to come back for Part 3. Be sure to check Fall Decor Idea House Part 1 if you missed it!

Wheat Pictures

You see wheat used as fall accents in a lot of arrangements. It’s symbolic of the fall harvest time. These easy Wheat Pictures are a unique addition to your fall home decor. Hang them among pictures on a wall or simply display on a table. My inspiration came from seeing them in a decorator’s idea house. I decided I needed to try them myself.

Wheat Pictures grandparentsplus.com

Use a Dollar Store black frame or any frame you might have on hand. The size you choose depends on where you want to use it. I happened to have a small black frame on hand so I decided to use it for this project. The size is 4 x 6.

There are different kinds of wheat. I had three kinds. The black-bearded wheat, white-bearded wheat, and simply wheat with no beard at all. Because the size of my frame was small, I used the non-bearded wheat.

The supplies you need are:  thin wire, wheat, frame, burlap (or anything for a background), ribbon and glue gun.

Wheat Pictures grandparentsplus.com

I used a dark brown burlap to contrast with the cream-colored wheat. I, also, found some orange 1/4 ” ribbon that I happened to have on hand.  Instead of ribbon, raffia, or yarn works, too. Other suggested backgrounds are a textured fabric, wallpaper, or scrap-booking paper.

First, Remove the glass from the frame. You do not need it.

Next, I cut the burlap just larger than the frame opening. You can use the cardboard insert as a pattern. If you have some spray adhesive, spray the cardboard insert and place the burlap over it and adhere in place. I didn’t have that adhesive, so I just placed it in the opening, put the cardboard insert in, and pulled it tight. Then, I trimmed the excess burlap and replaced the backing.

Then, once your frame is ready, secure the bunch of wheat with the wire. Cut stems to fit the frame. Don’t cut it evenly, but keep some a bit short and some longer.

Finally, tie the ribbon around the wire and secure the wheat bunch to the burlap with a glue gun.

There, you’re done!

Wheat Pictures grandparentsplus.com

Don’t you like quick, simple, and easy? I might add inexpensive, too!

If you have a long narrow frame, do three small bunches horizontally. Another variation is with a plain ribbon, write “Give Thanks”, if you choose.

Wheat Pictures is a fast and easy craft and one that adds a nice touch to your fall decor. Nice for a hostess gift, too!

You may have all the materials necessary already on hand. Try it and you’ll see how easy it is to do!

Notice the side tables made from plant containers. They’re filled with mulch and a glass piece is added on top.

From the ceiling hangs a metal orb filled to the brim with decorative twig acorns, artificial fall stems and string lights. It creates wonderful mood lighting.

In the yard, under a tree, sits a cute scarecrow. This “Miss” has floral stems for the eyes. Buttons create the nose and mouth. All decked out in a fancy hat, this scarecrow wouldn’t scare anyone. In fact, she looks like she is going to a tea party! I think she should change her boots, however!

I told you they use re-purposed items in different ways!

The bed spring is decorated to the max with honeysuckle vine entwined with string lights, colored jars,  lanterns, and fall leaves. Wow! What an impressive sight! I’ll bet it looks amazing at night all lit up!

Notice the plants tied with raffia and an artificial apple slice all sitting on the window ledge.

The next item is a chicken feeder re-purposed as a decorative item filled with various small artificial pumpkins.

Also, on the porch, is an oak shelving unit. The decoration on top is honeysuckle vine mixed with some fall garlands along with a raffia bow. I like the way it flows.

DIY Fall Napkin Rings

This DIY idea is probably the easiest, fastest, and most inexpensive way to add style to your fall or Thanksgiving table. These DIY Fall Napkin Rings look so good and add just the right touch to your table setting.  They take so little time and effort to make that even kids can make them! (with adult supervision of the glue gun, of course)

DIY Fall Napkin Rings grandparentsplus.com

With just two items for materials and a glue gun, you’re set to start.

I used a thin piece of rope (twine or raffia works, too) and small artificial leaves. My leaves were off a fall plant that I wasn’t using. The colors worked with the colors of the dishes and placemats.

DIY Fall Napkin Rings grandparentsplus.com

Cut a 36 inch piece of rope (this doesn’t need to be exact). With the glue gun, secure one leaf to each end of the rope.  OK! You’re done!

DIY Fall Napkin Rings grandparentsplus.com

How long did that take?  Now, that’s EASY! It takes longer to wrap them around a napkin than to make them!

Oh, wait! Besides using as napkin rings, you can use them as accents wrapped around a candle or candy jar….

DIY Fall Napkin Rings grandparentsplus.com

Don’t limit this to just leaves. You can certainly change to a flower, too! Whatever you use, make sure it will lay flat. I tried small pumpkins, but you wind up seeing the glued part. They didn’t look good. If they were flat cutouts, then they would be OK. I’ve seen seasonal cutouts at the craft stores which would work, too.

So, are you sold on making these easy DIY Fall Napkin Rings? Bet it takes you less than 10 minutes to make enough for your table.

Wow, these are so easy to make!

Thanks for stopping by and have fun! Wouldn’t these make a nice gift, too?

Enjoy!

Freezing Tomatoes the Easy Way!

There is nothing better than a fresh, ripe tomato from the garden! The flavor is wonderful, but often you get more than you can eat! Now what? How do you quickly and easily save them for soups, chili, or stews?

Now, I don’t like skinning tomatoes! It’s a messy job! Besides, you do lose the nutrients contained in and right under the skin. Why not make it easier? Freezing Tomatoes the Easy Way is better, less messy and quicker, too! Let me show you how….

Freezing Tomatoes the Easy Way! grandparentsplus.com

You will need a food processor or bullet. Just simply core the tomatoes and cut off any blemishes. Put them into the food processor or bullet and process.

Freezing Tomatoes the Easy Way grandparentsplus.com

Puree the tomatoes and pour into muffin tins.

Freezing Tomatoes the Easy Way grandparentsplus.com

Place in the freezer. When completely frozen, set in warm water for just a few seconds until they loosen. Dump into  freezer bags,  place in your freezer, and you’re done! Take out what you need to add to your recipes, reseal, and keep the rest for the next recipe. Now, isn’t that easy?

Freezing Tomatoes the Easy Way grandparentsplus.com

I don’t know if this is a new idea or not, but I thought I’d try it and it worked for me! Hope this helps you, too!

Enjoy!

Sweet Gum Ball Ideas

Last fall, we stopped in St. Louis, Missouri to visit some friends. In their yard, they had a Sweet Gum Ball tree! On their lawn, Sweet Gum Balls were strewn all around. I immediately asked if I could pick some up!  They replied that I could take the entire yard-full. They are pretty for crafts, but nasty if you step on them; especially barefoot! Ouch! I filled a plastic bag and this fall took them out to see what I could do with them both in crafts and decor. Here’s what I came up with…..

Sweet Gum Ball Ideas grandparentsplus.com

My grandson thought of making a mouse, so I did! I used two different size gum balls, a pinecone end for his nose, coffee beans for his hands and feet, and the ears were little acorn caps, I believe. (I found them in their yard, too. They look different from the ones we have in our yard.) The tail is the natural stem of the Sweet Gum Ball. This little guy now appears at different spots around the house!

Sweet Gum Ball Ideas grandparentsplus.com

There he is….

Sweet Gum Ball Ideas grandparentsplus.com

This little mouse started me thinking of other things. Here they are….

I used pinecone scales, too.

Sweet Gum Ball Ideas grandparentsplus.com

Couldn’t stop…..

Sweet Gum Ball Ideas grandparentsplus.com

And this…..

Sweet Gum Ball Ideas grandparentsplus.com

Of course, a wreath (which I needed to stabilize with a cardboard or foam backing)…

Sweet Gum Ball Ideas grandparentsplus.com

Finally, a star…..

Sweet Gum Ball Ideas grandparentsplus.com

For decor ideas, I filled a decorative glass jar with Sweet Gum Balls and orange pumpkin pom-poms for color.

Sweet Gum Ball Ideas grandparentsplus.com

I used them in a dried display with fungi and artificial pumpkins.

Sweet Gum Ball Ideas grandparentsplus.com

Finally, I filled a dish with a few Sweet Gum Balls, small pinecones and artificial orange pumpkins.

Sweet Gum Ball Ideas grandparentsplus.com

They sure came in handy for crafts and decorating! Guess I’ll have to go back and get some more! I don’t think I would like one of those trees in my yard, however. They sure have sharp points! I can see why they don’t like them.  When you step on them, it is easy to twist your ankle, too!

Sweet Gum Ball Ideas grandparenstplus.com

Other ideas are to make a Christmas tree or a large wreath.

I’m sure you can come up with more Sweet Gum Ball Ideas! I really like the texture they add!

Do you have Sweet Gum Ball Trees?

Amazing Sunsets

We are fortunate to live on a small lake facing west. During the summer, we see some Amazing Sunsets! Each one is completely different. Even though it is take from our same yard, the colors, clouds, and water change to paint a different picture every time. (By the way, these are not color enhanced!)

Amazing Sunsets grandparentsplus.com

Some pictures are from my deck and some are from the beach area. I just love to see a beautiful sunset! Only God, our Creator,  can paint a picture so different and beautiful every time! On the picture above, the tall, stately, White Pines silhouette this amazing sunset! This was so short-lived.  Five minutes later, it was gone.

Amazing Sunsets grandparentsplus.com

For the one above, I zoomed and focused across the lake. Those storm clouds turned into objects of beauty with the sun’s power.

Here’s another of pinks and blues….

Quite different with grays and orange!

The next one shows clouds that seem laced in pink!

We’re not the only place that enjoys beautiful sunsets. I took this picture during our visit to the Puget Sound in Washington. There’s a sliver of the moon showing across the water.

Back at home again…..

The sunset this night didn’t start too spectacular, but…….

the clouds moved and displayed the sun’s rays!

These next 3 shots I sent to a local news station and they made the news that night.

I don’t think I’ve ever seen the sun’s rays like they were this night. The clouds suddenly had a silver lining!

And finally fading away…..

The next two pictures were taken about 10 minutes apart.  At first, it looked like this…..

Later it changed to look like this…..

Another evening, it looked like this….

It seems that when there are  clouds in the sky at sunset, the sun does magic with them! Sort of like our lives…sometimes there are “grey clouds”, but God can do “magic” at making our lives beautiful again through Jesus Christ, our Lord! It reminds me of the song, “Something Beautiful”.  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YIfdDLXuuUg

I was just finishing this post and looked out the window at this Amazing Sunset! I had to include it!

Upcycled Can to Vase!

The definition of an “upcycle” is  to “reuse (discarded objects or material) in such a way as to create a product of a higher quality or value than the original”. This Upcycled Can to Vase certainly fits that description. Not only are you reusing the can, but, also, reusing a corrugated cardboard box! It make a perfect textured vase for a flower arrangement.

Upcycled Can to Vase grandparentsplus.com

Here are the materials I used, but you can change the color, ribbon, and flowers to suit your need.

I used a 15 oz can, ribbon, sunflowers, and a piece of corrugated cardboard.  Not pictured is spray paint.

Upcycled Can to Vase grandparentsplus.com

Take a piece of corrugated cardboard and cut just a bit larger than the can in height and long enough to go around the can. Tear off the top piece of paper to show the corrugated texture. Some of the paper will stick so use a damp cloth and rub down the ribs to loosen the paper and then use tweezers to get the extra paper off. Let the cardboard dry. Once dry, spray paint.

Upcycled Can to Vase grandparentsplus.com

When the paint has dried, hot glue the corrugated piece around the can. No need to remove the label as it won’t show.

Next, add a textured piece of ribbon or burlap and hot glue in place. ( a bow is optional).

Upcycled Can to Vase grandparentsplus.com

Now, arrange the flowers in the “upcycled can to a vase”. Use floral foam, if desired, to hold the flowers.

Upcycled Can to Vase grandparentsplus.com

For other seasons, paint the corrugated cardboard a different color. Then, and add ribbon and flowers to coordinate with your color scheme.

If using for an outside event, fill the bottom of the can with rocks to add weight so it doesn’t blow over. Now, wasn’t that easy and inexpensive?

Upcycled Can to Vase grandparentsplus.com

The sunflowers are from the Dollar Tree so it really is an inexpensive floral arrangement!

So, don’t throw those cans or boxes away! Now, you know how to upcycle them!

Have fun!
