Puzzle Piece Crafts for All Seasons!

Puzzle Piece Crafts for All Seasons!

Do you have some old puzzles that have some pieces missing? If not, you can find them easily at garage sales and thrift stores. Puzzles are frustrating when there are pieces missing so might as well recycle them into some puzzle piece crafts.

I’ve included a few ideas that I have done and then rounded-up lots more for all seasons of the year! Hope they come in handy!

To get started, on a nice calm day, place puzzle pieces in a box and spray paint. If  painting each piece by hand with acrylic paints, the paint stays better on the back side of the puzzle pieces. Otherwise, spray paint is fine on the front.

Paint  pieces with many different colors. It’s a good way to use up extra spray paint, right? You will want a variety of colors so you have them on hand for any season. Let dry and bag them according to color.

Red for Valentines, Apples, Christmas

Green for Christmas Trees, wreaths, Spring leaves, aliens or monsters

Yellow for sun, Easter Cross, lions

Orange for pumpkins, fall leaves

Pink for Valentines

Black for Halloween bats, faces on pumpkins

White for lambs, bunnies, snowflakes, snowmen

Brown for reindeer, trees

Here are ideas for each season:

Crispy Baked Fish

Crispy Baked Fish – the easy way to cook fish without the fishy smell!

Crispy Baked Fish grandparentsplus.com

Anyone been fishing? There’s nothing like a fresh catch of fish! However, frying fish really smells up the house. Here’s a better way to fix fish (say that 10 times real fast) without the fishy smell. The fillets  still have a crunchy outside like frying, but this is much easier to do and there’s no smell! The Crispy Baked Fish recipe method is one you’ll use again and again.

Ingredients:

 Fish Fillets

Regular Ritz  crackers (other crackers don’t taste the same in this recipe)

Butter

Eggs or Milk

Directions:

Crush Ritz crackers really fine

Dip fish fillets in either milk or beaten eggs.

Roll and pat fillets in crushed Ritz cracker crumbs.

Place on a non-stick cookie sheet or coat sheet lightly with a cooking spray.

Crispy Baked Fish grandparentsplus.com

Drizzle fillets generously with melted butter

Bake at 400 degrees for approx 15 minutes until lightly browned and fish flakes. (time depends on thickness of fillets)

Sprinkle with a few parsley flakes for color. Serve with lemon.

Crispy Baked Fish grandparentsplus.com

I learned this method from some friends in Florida and I’ve used it ever since.

Enjoy!

Hint for Dividing Hosta!

A Fall Hint for Dividing Hosta……

When Spring arrives and the hosta start to peek their heads out of the ground, it’s hard to remember which hostas needed dividing. They all look the same! Here is a fall hint for dividing hosta in the Spring! It is an easy way to remember where that specific hosta is located that you wanted to divide.

.

Fall Hint for Dividing Hosta In the Spring grandparentsplus.com

Take a red, sturdy, plastic knife and label both ends with the name of the hosta using a permanent black marker. The winter elements of snow and ice may wear away the top label, but they won’t harm the bottom one.

Fall Hint for Dividing Hosta in the Spring grandparentsplus.com

Stick the red knife half-way in the ground securely by the hosta that you want to remember to divide. Place it either right, left or center, whichever you choose, but be consistent with every one you place. Now, when Spring comes, the red knife will be a reminder of where that hosta is that needs dividing. You won’t be mistaken. If the name has worn off, you still can identify it by the lower half of the knife that is in the ground.

Easy!

When you are dividing  hosta before the leaves unfold, the hosta  look like they’ve never been touched.   Dividing later still works, but they won’t look their best until the next year.

Thanks for stopping by! You’re invited to look at my Hosta Haven! I really enjoy my garden!

Chicken Cordon Bleu – the easy way!

No pounding, stuffing, rolling, or dipping with this Chicken Cordon Bleu recipe! This one is “the easy way”.

Now, did that get your attention?

Chicken Cordon Bleu - the easy way! grandparentsplus.com

With this recipe, you have all the wonderful flavors of the “hard to prepare” recipe with the ease of  quick preparation. Absolutely true! I like that, don’t you?

Chicken Cordon Bleu – the easy way,  simply involves the layering of the ingredients. (That’s my kind of recipe!) Keep the ingredients on hand and you can have company over for a delightful meal on short notice.

It takes only 35 minutes to cook, so when the first guest arrives, I pop the dish in the oven and start with appetizers. This gives just enough time for the dish to bake.

When I have served this meal, my guests have always asked for the recipe so I know you’ll enjoy this , too! It is fancy enough for company, yet, simple enough for everyday.

Ingredients…..

6 chicken breasts – cut fairly uniform in size – pat dry

6 pieces of  thin sliced ham  ( I use turkey ham, too) approx 1/16 inch thick

1 box chicken flavored stuffing mix

1 can cream of chicken soup ( when out of this, I’ve used cream of mushroom)

2  tablespoons Dijon Mustard

6 slices of Swiss Cheese

chopped, fresh parsley

Directions:

Make the chicken flavored stuffing according to directions on the box.

In a greased 9 x 13 pan, place chicken breasts

Place a slice of ham on top of each chicken breast.

Chicken Cordon Bleu - the easy way! grandparentsplus.com

Mix Dijon Mustard with the soup in the can (no extra dirty dishes required)

Spread soup mixture on top of breasts

Chicken Cordon Bleu - the easy way! grandparentsplus.com

Sprinkle stuffing on top and bake at 400 degrees for 35 minutes.   Plus extra 3-5 minutes with cheese on top.

Chicken Cordon Bleu- the easy way! grandparentsplus.com

Hint: Do not mix thighs and breasts as they get done at  different times. This amount of time is for chicken breasts only.

Remove from oven. Place slices of Swiss cheese over each chicken breast and bake for 3-5  minutes until melted.

Serves 6

Chicken Cordon Bleu - the easy way! grandparentsplus.com

Chicken  Cordon Bleu is ready to serve! Add a colorful vegetable, salad, and you’ve got a lovely dinner that is so good!  Sprinkle fresh parsley on top of each chicken breast for color!

See the different layers?

Chicken Cordon Bleu - the easy way! grandparentsplus.com

Now, wasn’t that easy?

Our family really enjoys this recipe! Hope you do, too!

Purple Wedding Shower

The color of purple has become very popular this year. I really like all the beautiful shades of purple. Another niece is getting married and the bridesmaid dresses are purple so I gave a Purple Wedding Shower on her behalf! This was my second wedding shower to give within a month’s time!

Purple Wedding Shower grandparentsplus.com

As I got into planning, the  purple ideas kept coming. Here’s the list of purple things I did….

Purple Corsage:

Three artificial pansies with a few greens and a purple tulle ribbon made a cute corsage for the bride to-be. I couldn’t find my floral tape, so I hot glued the pieces together and it worked!

Purple Wedding Shower grandparentsplus.com

Purple Centerpiece:

I can’t take credit for this beautiful centerpiece as I borrowed it from a friend. It was a gorgeous addition to my table. On either side, I had glass candle holders. They’re quite large so they complimented the size of the centerpiece.

Purple Wedding Shower grandparentsplus.com

Purple Candies:

These were so quick and easy to do! I used square pretzels and dipped them in lavender candy melts (Wilton). They looked a bit plain so I added a white chocolate chip in the middle.

Purple Wedding Shower grandparentsplus.com

I also had purple salt-water taffy. At the grocery store, they had bulk taffy and I stood there and picked out the purple ones. No prep on this one!

Purple Punch:

This was a non-alcohol lunch so I took the recipe of my Holiday Punch and changed it by using blackberry juice! I tested it out, first, and it tasted good so it worked!

Purple Wedding Shower grandparentsplus.com

Cake:

For the bride-dress cake, I used a white cake mix to make the cupcakes. You’ve probably noticed this Wedding Dress Cake on Pinterest. It is pretty easy to do. When I first did this for a shower, I was really worried it wouldn’t turn out as I’ve never done any cake decorating before! The link to a great video tutorial is on Youtube.

OK, you may wonder if I served a purple cake. Well, I didn’t think the entire cupcake would look good colored purple so I took a little batter out (a half cup or so) and used the cake icing colors of red and blue until I got a shade of purple and added it to the small bowl of batter. When filling the cupcakes, I put a teaspoon of white batter and then added a teaspoon of purple batter and then finished with white batter. I used a toothpick to swirl the two colors together (don’t mix too much) and got a pretty swirl of purple through the white cupcake. It wasn’t noticeable until you opened it up.

Inside……

Blackberry Ice Cream (Purple):

What’s cake without ice cream?  I researched where to buy some purple ice cream (blackberry or blueberry), but didn’t find anything that was local. Also, I didn’t have an ice cream churn – another hurdle to overcome. I found a recipe online of a Blackberry Ice Cream that didn’t need churning. I had some frozen blackberries and decided it was worth a try. It turned out fantastic!

Purple Wedding Shower grandparentsplus.com

Knife, Fork and Spoon wrapped in a purple napkin….

Just another colorful touch is to wrap the eating utensils in the napkin and tie with a bow. Place them in a bowl and not just on the table. I like to have them at the end so they don’t have to hang onto them when dishing up their food.

Purple Wedding Shower grandparetnsplus.com

Here is the menu I served….

Wild Rice Chicken Salad

Oriental Cole Slaw  (with lots of red (purple) cabbage)

Fruit Fling

Veggie Platter and Dip

Mini-Croissants

Potato Chips

Blackberry Ice Cream and Cupcakes with Buttercream Frosting

While this was a “Purple Wedding Shower”, the ideas are easily changeable to any color for any wedding shower or party!

Thanks for stopping by and viewing my Purple Wedding Shower Ideas!

1-Dollar Vases Upscaled

1 Dollar Vases Upscaled- 4 different Ways!

1 Dollar Vases Upscaled grandparentsplus.com

When I saw these cute vases at the Dollar Tree, I knew they would look great upscaled.  They look fine just plain, but by upscaling them, they look even better! They make a great gift with a few fresh or artificial flowers. They come in several colors, but they don’t last long on the shelves. You may want to ask when they get a shipment in so you know when they’re available.

Some of the supplies I used…..

1 Dollar Vases Upscaled grandparentsplus.com

I purchased 3 items from Dollar Tree. They had some nice grasses and a small bunch of chrysanthemums – total $3.00  The rest of the supplies I had on hand……various ribbons, a little bling, and some twine.

Let me show you four different ways to make these vases upscaled…….

#1  Add twine around the top neck of the vase!

This gives it a casual look.  Wrap the twine around the neck a few times and adhere with clear tacky glue. I added some fall flowers and grasses using only half the mums.  It makes a nice  centerpiece for a small table.

1 Dollar Vases Upscaled grandparentsplus.com

#2 Add some bling!

By adding a bit of bling, it really dresses it up! I used a rhinestone ribbon for that extra sparkle touch.

1 Dollar Vases Upcycled grandparentsplus.com

#3 Add ribbon!

Whatever the occasion, Christmas, Wedding, 4th of July, Easter, etc., you can always find cute ribbon to accent the vase. Add a single rose, ferns, Baby’s Breath, and you have a beautiful gift!

1 Dollar Vases Upscaled grandparentsplus.com

#4 Add hot glue!

This method gives lots of texture.  This vase was also from the Dollar Tree. I used hot glue for the bottom only, but you certainly could do the entire vase. Mine is not perfect, but it still looks great!

I  saw this method used on the back side of a glass window on a piece of furniture in an exclusive furnishings store.

1 Dollar Vases Upscaled grandparentsplus.com

Take a hot glue gun and start going around the vase. It is best to set it on a paper plate or something that you can turn and get all sides. You’ll need lots of glue sticks, too! This method, however,  is permanent.

1 Dollar Vases Upscaled grandparentsplus.com

Don’t worry if it isn’t perfect….. It still looks great!

1 Dollar Vases Upscaled grandparentsplus.com

Do check on these vases ASAP! As I said, they don’t last long. The slender vases are 8 ” tall. The red vase with the rounded base is also 8 ” tall. I figured that if it didn’t turn out, I was only out one dollar!

So easy to get these 1 Dollar Vases Upscaled – many ways! You may want to keep a few extra on hand for gifts.

Thanks for stopping by!

Summer Hockey Game

I made a Summer Hockey Game – “Slip and Slide” version for the grandkids. It was one of the fun events for our Oma and Opa Camp 2014. (Grandma & Grandpa Camp) The kids are ages 5-10 and this was a hit for all  ages.  The older kids really liked playing it fast, but it was easy enough for the little 5 yr.- olds to take part, too!

Summer Hockey Game - slip and slide grandparentsplus.com

Materials Needed:

Large tarp – I used a 10′ by 20′ tarp.  Make it bigger, if you have two players on each side at one time.

Duck Tape – any 2 colors

1  – 3/8″ dowel – 4 feet

2 pool noodles

Landscape Fabric Pegs – find these at Home Depot in the nursery department

2 rubber balls (I bought these at Dollar Tree – 2 balls for $1.)

Directions:

Use duct tape to tape a center  line on the tarp.

Use the second color to tape a line about 3 feet in front of the goal.

Cut dowel into four 1 foot  sections.

Use Fabric Pegs to secure tarp down on the lawn by placing them in the rivets and hammering them down. Make sure pegs get pounded level with the ground to prevent injuries.

On each end, pound dowel sections in two of the rivets ( approx. 3 in. down). Bend pool noodle and insert ends over the dowels for the goal.

Spray water all over the tarp and then squirt with soap (no-tears shampoo – if it gets in their eyes)

Add more water and soap as needed throughout the game!

Rules of the Game:

These are the rules we played…

Players could not go over the middle line. They had to shoot and play from their side.

No goal tending.

Players must be on their knees or slide around seated.

Balls must be hit with their open hand; not thrown. Balls could be caught with their hands, but then place down and hit with an open hand to score.

Vary play by using two balls at a time. Using two balls makes the Summer Hockey Game a lot faster. Extra kids not playing acted as ball runners.

With lots of kids, rotate them in.

Summer Hockey Game - slip & slide grandparentsplus.com

Summer Hockey Game - slip and slide grandparentsplus.com

This is a very “clean” game!! Rinse the kids off and no bath needed!  HA!

Have fun! I know your kids or grandkids will enjoy this game!

Fresh Peach Pie

Fresh Peach Pie (No-Bake)

Peaches are in season and this Fresh Peach Pie (no-bake) is one I always make this time of year. It is an easy recipe, too. I use an Oil Crust or as my mother called it, “Fresh Fruit Pie Crust”. The recipe for the crust is found on my Fresh Blueberry or Strawberry Pie post. The crust is one that doesn’t require rolling out.

Fresh Peach Pie grandparentsplus.com

Use ripe and juicy peaches for this pie. The glaze coats each piece and enhances the wonderful peach flavor! Not a morsel of this pie will be left, I guarantee. Invite friends over or pie for you may just each the whole thing yourself!

Ingredients:

1 baked pie crust- 9 inch

6-8 or so (depending on size) fresh peaches, peeled  – Don’t peel ahead as they will turn dark without the sauce.

1 cup sugar

1 cup water

2 Tablespoons cornstarch

3 Tablespoons Jello (orange) or 1 Tbsp. of Peach flavor and 2 Tbsp. of Orange

Directions:

Put sugar, water and cornstarch in a saucepan and bring to a boil while stirring.

When boiling, remove from heat and add the Jello. ( I often use 1 Tablespoon of Peach Jello and                   2 Tablespoons of Orange) . Using all Peach flavored Jello gives it less color, but you can adjust that to your liking.

Cool

Fill baked pie crust with pealed, fresh peaches – don’t be skimpy!

Fresh Peach Pie grandparentsplus.com

I dip my peaches for 30 sec. in boiling water and then peel them. It goes so fast that way. Just the skin comes off and a bit of the pink remains on the peach for a pretty looking pie.

When cooled, drizzle sauce over the fresh peaches covering them completely.

Fresh Peach Pie grandparentsplus.com

Refrigerate for 5-6  hours or until set.

My husband can hardly wait for peach season! This Fresh Peach Pie is one of his top 3 favorite pies!

Enjoy!

Front Porch Tour

Welcome to my front porch. It is a place where I love to sit and take in all the nature around me. There are hummingbirds, turkeys, deer, and I’ve even seen a bear! We live in a wooded area so nature is all around us. Sitting quietly and watching with a cup of coffee in the morning or a  cold glass of lemonade in the afternoon is so relaxing and refreshing!

Front Porch Tour grandparentsplus.com

Front Porch Tour grandparentsplus.com

When we built this house 10 years ago, one thing I wanted was a large front porch. It is something I’ve really enjoyed! Let me take your on a tour.

The front door entrance is at an angle into the house. On the left side is a $5 bench (I found at a garage sale) that I painted white. The little concrete dog was a piece that my dad found and always had at their front door. Now, it greets people at my door!

Front Porch Tour grandparentsplus.com

To the right, I have an antique red wheelbarrow. In the summer it holds ferns and in the winter I put evergreens and birch logs. An old weather vane adds some height.

Front Porch Tour grandparentsplus.com

Further to the right is a wood burning stove. This was the working stove in the cottage that was originally on this property. The cottage needed so much repair so we tore it down, but saved the stove.

Peeking through the ferns and window boxes, you can see the vintage wrought iron table and chairs.

Front Porch Tour grandparentsplus.com

I had a wicker sofa and chairs, but the squirrels chewed on it so I went with wrought iron! You can see the redo of this set at Vintage Wrought Iron Table and Chairs Redo.

Now, to the left of the entrance on the front porch……

Front Porch Tour grandparentsplus.com

The little antique table and chairs is a French Barrel Garden Chair Set (I think that is what it is called). I found it at a little out-of-the-way antique store where a woman was bringing it in to sell. I asked the price and bought it right away. It was a steal! You often see these in garden magazines.

Front Porch Tour grandparentsplus.com

The rocking chair is where you will find me in the morning with a cup of coffee! It has the best view of the hummingbirds and the hosta garden.

Imagine yourself sitting on my front porch in these rocking chairs and this is what you see close up.

Front Porch Tour grandparentsplus.com

Two of the hummingbird feeders hang from the vintage Dutch girl weather vane. I had to add a bit of “Dutch” since we are of that heritage! I found them in Alpharetta, Georgia at an antique store that was closing. I’m sure, because they were a Dutch girl, not everyone wanted it so I snagged them at a very reasonable price.

Front Porch Tour grandparentsplus.com

So that’s my front porch tour. I hope it gave you some ideas for using some old vintage pieces. If you want a tour of my hosta garden, go to Hosta Haven! I have over 60 varieties!

If you’re in the area, drop by for a glass of lemonade on my front porch, of course!
